The Vietnamese black-breasted leaf turtle (Geoemyda spengleri) is a critically endangered species of turtle that is endemic to Vietnam and parts of China. They are small, with adults reaching a maximum size of around 6-7 inches, and have a dark brown or black shell with yellowish-orange markings on the underside.
They are primarily arboreal and spend most of their time in trees, coming down to the forest floor for only short periods. They feed on insects, snails, and other small invertebrates.
The black-breasted leaf turtle is threatened by habitat loss and the illegal pet trade, with many individuals being captured and sold for use as pets or for traditional medicine.
Conservation efforts for this species include protection of its natural habitat, enforcement of laws against the illegal pet trade, and captive breeding programs to ensure the survival of the species.
